camea&#700,,,,s latest release on her imprint neverwhere pays homage to her hometown seattle&#700,,,,s original underground rave warehouse, naf studios, where she went dancing in the late 90s and began her journey that ultimately landed her in berlin. also where nirvanna&#700,,,,s “smells like teen spirit” video was filmed (and ironically now a catholic publishing house), the hedonistic venue is legendary to those who picked up rave flyers scattered on the streets of seattle and took a chance on an emerging new electronic music scene. both originals reflect the raw warehouse vibe of this era, and matrixxman and markus suckut have weighed in with heavy remixes. markus puts his signature on the naf 97 original with a deep space atmospheric techno banger, and matrixxman reworks the original 303 recordings in jack u, sending it into another dimension - and even further.

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks. »applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible. layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance. rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the ems studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«. the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular av performances.

hmot aka stas sharifullin is siberian-born, moscow-based musician, curator, educator and multi-disciplinary artist from siberia. using modular synthesizer, field recordings and visual programming languages, hmot collects sounds and organizes them into structures, pushing traditional electronic music genres beyond their comfort zones. “permanent imbalance” is his ep debut on the berlin imprint oqko following a single contribution to the label’s “form_1” compilation. structurally, “permanent imbalance” is disorderly and elusive, it’s a techno record which has undergone a gregor samsaesque metamorphosis. embedded with dizzying polyrhythmics, the discontinuity at the heart of the record might also be its central directive – interrupting the ecstatic clubbing experience in favor of a contradictory reality which is impossible to describe with regular rhythms. boldly submitted to the niche of dance music deviations, “permanent imbalance” also reveals techniques directly derived from early institutional electronics and musique concrete. but where others would pile on the layers, sharifullin keeps it trim. these are just some finishing touches enhancing his rickety and multifaceted soundscapes. subject to constant deviations of its own temporality, this music proves to mirror the crisis in which modernity resides – a state of life out of balance which now appears to be permanent as never before.

orient meets occident. collector edition of jaime zenamon’s debut album from 1984 available now! zenamon studied guitar and composition in israel, spain, portugal and in various south american countries. he a was student of abel carlevaro and worked as teacher at the berlin music university (hdk) from 1980 until 1992. the album was recorded at christopher franke’s (tangerine dream) studio and features udo hanten from the cult krautrock project you. similar sound compared to cluster, neu!, kraftwerk but with stronger esoteric world music influences. nandu muley playing the santoor, a 100 string music instrument which was already used by assyrian musicians for the production of their hits some thousand years ago :) originally released on polydor in 1984 the album get’s re-released for the first time by private records in 2015. remastered from the original master tapes at 24 bit. really rare recordings, especially the 12“ is one of the most valuable and sought after german electronic records of the 1980’s.

weapons of mass destruction was one of the last eps by nur jaber , which is best known in berlin for its residence at the techno-matinee staub . this could be heard slammender, dry techno with sometimes disturbing vocals – hope sounds different. more precisely: hope sounds like the first longplayer of the native lebanese. if only – a state of peace still carries a conditional in the title, but the music on the nine tracks speak very directly of a better world. inspired by the herbaceous-cosmic sound of the berlin school, ambient and ambient techno in all its facets and the friendlier side of the artificial intelligence tradition, the osf unites-mit operator on their debut album a variety of styles, which are translated into an equally sensible as multi-layered narrative. peace, that would be something for a change.

for phonicas landmark 20th release on the main label we go back to a classic from the same year the shop opened stereofuses casino ep, originally released on berlin label salo in 2003. the casino ep marked the first collaboration between martin wörner & thorsten diegel as stereofuse. they followed it up with a string of other 12inches for other labels but its this initial 12inch that has been fetching high prices second-hand as one of the most sought after releases on salo and for very good reason. a timeless ep sitting somewhere between house and techno (before tech-house became a disputed tag-line!) with the likes of ricardo villalobos & craig richards playing it regularly in their sets.

tom dragebo is a norwegian born dj and berlin residential producer whose love for techno and house music is infectious and radiates through every set he plays. hailing from a small leafy town in norway, dragebo has been djing for over 10 years and has been producing tracks since 2008. his latest release being the critically acclaimed so good ep on cleanroom records. his emotive and powerful debut for full pupp is a real tech treat well rounded by each a sparkling, driving pt diskomiks and forcefully clapping and delicately swirling prins thomas pure acid rett i fletta versjon.

austrian imprint luv shack records is opening up yet another chapter in 2018 by welcoming irish house and techno aficionado and misfit resident andrew johnston aka moodtrax and his own-brand of super warm and brooding sound to their stable. the perfect illusion ep opens up with never can get away, a steamy & dreamy cut that sucks you right in to its lair of thick pads and trancy sequences, which are contrasted by a carefully programmed synth bassline and a stomping house beat. the title track immediately evokes early chicago warehouse jam feelings, with bass sequence, detuned chords and classic drum patterns all oozing of old analogue roland machines. the meticulously arranged percussions section and a set of eerie strings and pads make this one definitely stand out from the crowd. running number starts as a no-nonsense house track, carried by a beefy unisono bassline and a 16th note heavy drum pattern, yet it transcends into 80s territory with the help of a deeply emotional chord progression that might just make you forget you re in a club. berlin duo longhair give running number the luvremix treatment, really digging deep into that chord progression and building a melody and synth-bell infused italo-house track around it that should make this years festival crowd weep and rejoice alike.

unterton kicks off 2018 sideways with three tracks of high-octane electronics by mark. 0-160 bpm in 15 minutes. previous eps for a colourful storm had a conceptual focus: the destructive effects of tech start-ups on berlin’s cultural landscape. sound-wise, they paired frenetic, experimental d‘n’b with musique concrète. on his unterton debut, mark continues further down a path of dark and psychedelic beat science. at times tranquil and hypnotic, other times charging forward between cracked whips and whiplash left-turns. “comedy is the dog that walks out of the room when you call its name.”

ab syndrom, the berlin duo, is coming with their third album. plastik is a bit like the coming of age album of the band. it tells stories of growing up emotionally and being played into a hard and post capitalistic environment. nevertheless you will find some quite romantic lyrics and songs between lyrical metaphors and a rough and urban reality in berlin neukölln, their neighborhood. the music on plastik is mainly a percussion driven and electronic laden journey. not your average pop arrangements but subtle compositions and laid back vocals with a certain chopped and screw twist. the bands musical projection is a most consequent advancement of their three albums and their body of work so far. bennet seuss, singer and composer is defining his own style in writing autobiographic lyrics with a certain twist to the obscure and umtransparent. a great album for sure.
